On his latest offering, the vinyl-only Tenth Volume of Maps, Melbourne's Francis Plagne and his band navigate folk, classic pop, stately chamber arrangements and sporadic experimentation. Arriving at a coherent sonic destination with more of a studio aesthetic than his two earlier albums, it displays a propensity for musique concr te and field recordings. Instilled with the playfulness of Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys and recalling at times Syd Barrett and Caetano Veloso, Tenth Volume of Maps cunningly manages to conceal Plagne's gorgeous pop moments in a backdrop of loose improvisation and pastoral string-andpiano sojourns.
