This is the debut solo release by Soley Stefansdottir, a 23 year old girl from Reykjavik, student of composition and a member of the Icelandic collective Seabear. It is also the debut of a singer and dreamer: Six songs held together by S ley's piano play and voice. But on 'Theater Island' Soley uses a lot of instruments: strings, guitars, electronic crackles and noises.The record is at once dotty, impressionistic and catchy, with touching pop balladry and open-hearted indie-folk ala Seabear. Some songs are disarming in their simplicity. But there's something vague and unreal that sticks to all of these songs as well. Like Alice, S ley walks through her very own wonderland, where things happen that can only occur in the surreal logic of a dream.
