The She & Him story began in 2006 when renowned one-man band M. Ward recorded a duet with a girl named Zooey Deschanel. It was for one of the many films Zooey had acted in like Almost Famous or Elf. They formed a strong bond and Deschanel realized that if songs were acorns, then this was indeed her wintertime; so she sent her recordings to Ward, and those demos became the basis for Volume One. Aiming to achieve the warmth and charm of pop and country records from the early and mid part of the twentieth century, Ward, who also produced the record, and Deschanel, who wrote most of the music, called upon the help of a number of extraordinary musicians including Adam Selzer, Mike Coykendall, and Mike Mogis to help out. She & Him are playing a handful of shows around the release (including performances at SXSW & Noise Pop festivals) and Zooey lots of interviews, before they once again go back to their lives of being actors and musicians.
