Prominent Swiss oboist and conductor Heinz Holliger returns to the ECM New Series with a sprawling album of stunning Swiss-German compositions, using both chamber music and unaccompanied voice. The centrepiece of this recording is the vocal cycle "Puneig " which sets the poetry of Anna Maria Bacher, who writes in an idiom threatened by extinction: the Walser-German language of Pumattertisch, native to the Pomater valley. Through the inner-workings of Holliger's mind and his contemporary performers, this makes for a very sublime and intricate recording.
