Mahler's Das Liude Der Erde (Song of the Earth) is one of the composer's most popular works. Lilli Paasikivi returns to Sydney next month to sing in the Ashkenazy/ SSO performances and recordings of Mahler's titanic Third Symphony. Song of the Earth was originally intended to be Mahler's tenth symphony, but Mahler renamed it to avoid the curse that felled Beethoven, Schubert, Bruckner and Dvorak after finishing their ninths.
