This marks the Onyx debut of one of the world'sgreatest cellists, Pieter Wispelwey. In thisoutstanding recording of mid-20th century cellomusic, Pieter makes his first recording of thegreat Walton Cello Concerto. Pieter recordedthe Walton in Australia in 2007 in several liveconcerts with the Sydney Symphony underthe experienced baton of the British conductorJeffrey Tate. This recording has been expertlyedited from the live concerts (applause omitted). The rest of the recording was made in studioconditions in Holland. The works for solo cello are interrelated andcomprise the Bloch Suite (written at exactly thesame time as the Walton Concerto in 1957), theearly Ligeti Sonata (1948-53) and two workswritten for Rostropovich: Britten's Ciaconnafrom the 2nd suite and one of Walton's owncontributions to the ground bass form, thePassacaglia. For the concerto Wispelwey plays his normalGuadagnini cello but for the solo cello workshe was thrilled to be able to record on the great'Magg' Stradivarius from 1698.
