Clovis People, Vol. 3 was inspired by the archeological discovery of some ancient tools about 100 yards from Taylor's home said to have belonged to a prehistoric culture known as the 'Clovis people' - who lived about 13,000 years ago before mysteriously disappearing. As Taylor said, "I just thought it was a cool title." Lyrically, the always profound Taylor addresses topics ranging through race, infidelity & death - including that of a child in this case. His self-styled "trance blues" uses unusual instrumentation alongside slowbuilding, hypnotic riffs built with acoustic and electric guitars and mandolin. On this outing Otis is once more joined by daughter Cassie on bass and ethereal harmonies, Ron Miles on coronet and superstar guitarist Gary Moore on a couple of tracks. Also adding some spectacular guitar work is gospel pedal steel man Chuck Campbell on nine tracks. Adding further intrigue to Otis' unique 'trance blues' are the inclusion of organ, violin and cello interspersed throughout the album.
