Jolie Holland's is a voice that attempts to transcend the new and encompass the old through the medium of American music. Like Ralph Stanley told her, "I don't even know what bluegrass music is - I consider myself a soul singer." So, yes, its the blues, and the tunes our grandparents hummed on unpaved highways, but its the same songs that coaxed tears out of the punk rock boy at the bar. The ladies swayed, the street kids hooted with bright eyes, the hip hop composer unselfconsciously slipped his hand over his heart, and your momma tapped her foot. New time old time: spooky American fairytales.

Sample lyric No 1: "I'm premeditating crime of a personal kind, I'm about to go out of my mind, I'm just about sick to death of taking breath". Sample lyric No 2: "Sister don't get worried cause this world is almost done". Sample lyric No 3: I'm lost without a place to go crazy". Like 'Catalpa', Jolie Holland's new album still has that feel of an old 78 found hidden in someone's attic - this time the sound is heavy on the swing era (almost cabaret in parts) with VERY upfront vocals - however musically it almost doesn't exist. A song like "Darlin Ukelele" sums up the approach - all theremin and ukelele played at 50 paces cut up with whistling (welcome back George Formby!) like they used to in the old days. A review of her first CD "You will be stunned into silence. You will not know why." still holds true.
