Like another bunch of local boys The Rectifiers promised, before they sidetracked themselves enough to remove all sign of guitars in their sound, Halfway deliver on that country rock sound that Mick n Keef pinched from Gram all those years ago (down to the very Exile-sounding lines like "gonna wipe that s**t from my shoe"). It sounds so good because it's more Oz-Country-Rock than it has the right to be (some of the vocals are so rough they sound straight from a Cosmic Psychos record!) and it's not so damn miserable that it can't afford a bit of a roll in the hay (so to speak) every now and then. As the liner notes state: "you'll hear a million songs from ten thousand years all heard and felt and understood and turned into totally distinctive tales of what The Louvin Brothers called the tragic songs of life. These are the songs of your life too". It all sounds very poetic doesn't it? Hell, it's just rock and roll with a pedal steel thrown in the mix and a country blues backbeat. Seven QLD boys and a lot of alcohol. Electricity. You won't hear many better debut CDs if you own the Uncle Tupelo back catalogue and still wonder why Jeff Tweedy hooked up with Jim O'Rourke. Dig in!
