In 1954, Californian quintet, The Platters, were taken under the wing of music impresario, Buck Ram, then seeking a successor to the Ink Spots who he had managed. A move to Mercury Records the following year quickly resulted in mainstream success. Beautifully crafted songs, harmonies and the sweet tenor of lead Tony Williams, resulted in over 30 breaches of the National 100 and 4 US Number Ones.
