Rodrigo and Gabriela are a Mexican couple whose love for one another (and for playing guitar) has taken them from speed metal bands in their native Mexico onto the European busking and world music circuit. They now play acoustic guitars, and favour melody over distortion, but you can still pick out their rock roots, as they race effortlessly through their guitar scales. The Mexican duo have refocused their dazzling guitar playing and brought in Spanish and Irish traditional influences, making music that blends many styles. It all came about organically – when they left Mexico, the duo shifted to Dublin, where they began busking. They went on to travel round Europe, busking in most of the continent's capital cities, listening all the time to the musicians they met. On Re-Foc (foc is the Catalan word for fire), they blend many influences across the nine instrumentals (they're joined by violin, bodhran, double bass and percussion). They've been championed by the likes of Damien Rice, and have received standing ovations from the festival audiences at Glastonbury and Womad.
