Considering Jeff Lang’s back catalogue, this album was inevitable. At each step in Jeff’s recording career, we came closer and closer to a pure Australian gem – a combination of the tenderness of Everything Is Still, the searing technical brilliance of Cedar Grove and the accessibility and appeal of Whatever Makes You Happy.
One listen to the opening track ‘Til They Cut Me Down will confirm he is his own man. This album is the real deal, full of raw poetic lyricism, and an atmospheric lilt that will transport listeners. Between The Dirt and Sky will ask you to listen up, again and again, because this is a tale told so well, you will be horrified and beguiled simultaneously. The delicate Molasses and Stone will ring in your head for days, requiring repeat listens just to satisfy this need that lay dormant before you heard the album.
This album fills a crucial spot in Australian music right now. It seems we are finally acknowledging the important and beautiful genre of 'blues and roots' music. This album raises the bar. While American influences are evident (such as the blues in ‘Til They Cut Me Down and an incredible droning version of Motherless Children), it’s roots run far deeper and wider to a musical landscape where Celtic strains collide with Middle Eastern instruments (Here She Comes Again), bluegrass slide slashes over African sounding percussion (Lubbock Texas) and Indian inflections soothe (And All The Snow Melted) or bump against blues and rock ’n’ roll (In My Time Of Dying). In addition instrumental pieces like I’m Not The One Sweating Like They Just Told A Lie reveal dark, groaning sound-scapes, coming across like a slightly disturbing soundtrack to some half-forgotten dream. This is truly an album that is worthy of the title “roots music”. It is music made for the enjoyment of anyone who is a fan of the genre, or simply for those who are fans of good music, played with passion and heart.
This is pure Australian magic, the soundtrack to Australia’s roots music movement.
As an additional bonus, there is a limited edition pressing that come with a free bonus CD of live tracks recorded in Australia in August 2004 featuring Jeff in band mode with special guests.
