Dam-Funk is to many a new name from the past year or two, seemingly bursting onto the scene with his 5LP / 2CD masterwork Toeachizown (STH2232LP / STH2232CD), itself a testimony to the golden era of electro-funk. At the request of Stones Throw founding guru Peanut Butter Wolf, Dam went through many of these recordings, all made on cassette. The result is Dam-Funk's Adolescent Funk, a 14-track album recorded between 1988 and 1992 giving great insight into the formative years of this funk prodigy.

Toddla T has come an incredibly long way from a shoe shop sales assistant and part-time DJ in his hometown of Sheffield. He has a regular slot on BBC Radio 1, an impressive production history which includes much of Roots Manuva's acclaimed 'Slime And Reason' album and a slew of remixes under his belt. On 'Watch Me Dance', Toddla T has created a dubwise, street-soul masterpiece, pretty much a snapshot of UK urban music of today.

Sifting through the herds of identikit Beatport sheep in the download charts or hearing the empty drivel that many of the biggest names soullessly churn out, you'd be forgiven for thinking that all the real musicians and original ideas have deserted dance music. If you know about Dutch duo 'Mason' however, you'll know that there's a small corner of old Amsterdam where the musicianship's force is still strong.
