Continuing on in their series of extraordinary global collaborations, Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) and Steve Reid return with their fourth and probably most special release to date, NYC. Kieran and Steve recorded NYC over two days in February 2008 at Avatar Studio, in Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen, where Missy Elliot, Miles Davis, The Roots, Chic, Steve Reich and more have all laid down classics. The choice of location is at the heart of what this record is about. Steve wanted to do something with the sound and feel of his home city, explains Kieran. The whole set, down to the choice of tracks and their sequencing, was influenced by New York City's (in)famous energies. Hebden and Reid's impressionistic take on their New York surroundings fuses the digital slash-and-staple of sampling and the irresistible momentum of jazz drumming, without ever forgetting that there's such a place as the dancefloor, and their continuous flow of collaborations blossom into its most satisfying shape yet. While their earliest sets were instant compositions, the duo headed into the studio this time with a number of themes already mapped out and road-tested over the course of the previous year's live shows. With its garrulous give and take, musical questions and answers, NYC is Kieran and Steve's best work so far.
