Over a career spanning twelve albums and countless live performances, Savatage has become a band of staggering power and limitless creativity. Formed by Jon and Criss Oliva in the early 80ies, Savatage quickly established itself at the cutting edge of the Hard Rock world. Tempering savage Metal attacks with haunting orchestrations and a distinctive melodic sense, the band has pushed the artistic envelope of their genre and, in the process, garnered a large world-wide following. The band's 1987 album, "Hall Of The Mountain King," signi?ed a more progressive, multi-layered approach to the Savatage sound, and became one of the most critically lauded Metal albums of the year. In 1990, "Gutter Ballet" was similarly cheered as "Metal record of the year". Savatage continued to evolve with the releases of further symphonic Rock concept albums like "Streets - A Rock Opera", "Dead Winter Dead" and "The Wake Of Magellan" that coincidentally formed the sound of their successful side project Trans-Siberian Orchestra, a mixture of Rock Opera and Musical. The unexpected death of guitarist Criss Oliva who was hit and killed by a drunk driver in 1993 shattered the band. Savatage continued on with various line-ups and released the albums "Handful of Rain", Dead Winter Dead", "The Wake Of Magellan" and ?nally "Poets and Madmen" but his death effectively spelled the end for the band. At their 25th anniversary in 2007, Jon Oliva announced the de?nite breakup of Savatage. This milestone-compilation features remastered classics plus 3 new acoustic recordings never released before (performed and produced by Jon Oliva in July 2009) as well as the full live show "Japan Live '94" released for the ?rst time on DVD within the limited edition 2CD/DVD. "Still The Orchestra Plays" will be complimented by the release of the full Savatage catalogue, remastered and expanded with bonus tracks, newly recorded audio commentary and extra material currently being assembled by the band.
