Malia is back, after a long creative break and comes up with a classy jazz record, which is a proud addition to the Emarcy jazz roster. Black Orchid is her special tribute to her big idol and role-model Nina Simone - a deep and fascinating recording, combining breathtaking vocals with elegant arrangements. Malia admired Nina Simone for her talent to transform these life experiences like, pain and passion, love and death, into something huge and unique. Deep feelings expressed through her voice, and good lyrics whose poetry can pervade completely different worlds. Malia is fascinated by the human warmth and brutal honesty that always left its mark on Nina's music. That Malia is now interpreting the repertoire of Nina Simone has to do with the fact that meanwhile she gained maturity and an understanding of Nina's songs that goes beyond the language. And it's only natural to her to express her gratitude towards her "musical mentor" by recording this tribute. The stories Nina Simone told in her songs are of utmost importance for Malia's renditions. The singer preserves the exciting minimalistic greatness of these melodies and underlines them with some unambiguous recitations.

The result is a sophisticated album that rather than just ‘crossing over’, seamlessly fuses musical styles together to create an entirely new sound. The Blue Room started life as Klein’s re-examination of Ray Charles’s classic, Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music, but soon moved away from being strictly an homage to that album. Mendoza's masterful string orchestrations perfectly complement Madeleine’s quest for open musical exploration. The sometimes eerie, often sparse arrangements prove the perfect canvas for Peyroux’s musical palette and seem to effortlessly blend with her voice. With the sixth track on the new album, Leonard Cohen’s “Bird On The Wire,” Peyroux returns to the iconic poet’s work. She revisits the tempting power of Careless Lo
