Tipped to be the Swedish pianist's international "breakthrough" album, Stenson is a veteran of ECM,first recording for the label in 1971 on Jan Garbarek's "Sart" album. "Goodbye" continues histradition of adventurous playing, which extends from an arrangement of Henry Purcell's "Music ForA While" to Ornette Coleman's "Race Face", via Stephen Sondheim's "Send In The Clowns", "ThereComes A Time" (written by Tony Williams for the Lifetime band), "Song About Earth" by Russianactor and protest singer Vladimir Vyotsky, "Alfonsina" by Argentine composer Ariel Ram rez, and"Good-Bye" which was the signature tune of the Benny Goodman orchestra in the 1930s and a hitfor Frank Sinatra/Nelson Riddle in the 50s. Joined by bassist Anders Jormin, who shares directioncredits, and drummer extraordinaire Paul Motian, "Goodbye" is set to be one of ECM's biggestalbums of 2005.
