The Jets are descendants of Australia's great pub rock denizens and, alone above all other contemporaries, carry the modern day flag for sweaty, straight-ahead rock. All the latte-sipping, headphone wearing DJs in the world could scratch their tastefully chosen records at the one time and it wouldn't come close to the racket that these guys create on a good night. Out of Newcastle, The Screaming Jets took this, their debut album, straight to the heartland. Dr Christian Barnard couldn't have done a better transplant himself. About as popular as rabies in the inner city, The Jets cover the suburbs like a bus network where their faithful fans take periodic relief from their humdrum lives for a night of music, mayhem and memories. Better was a Top Ten single from this album and it remains a favourite of commercial rock playlists for whom any music produced after the Triassic period is considered too modern. Its undeniable riff and chugging backbeat along with the simple, anthemic chorus have rendered it a classic in its field. All shit-eating grins and public displays of drunkenness, The Screaming Jets are an endearingly stupid pleasure, a relic that harkens back to the glory years of Australian pub rock - Andrew Cox
