In my opinion Dave Graney is Australia's best lyricist and this record is a super example of his style. While the Coral Snakes sit back with their taut, minimalist playing Graney's voice and most particularly his words take centre stage. Once there they command attention like Olivier on opening night in the West End. Always gently ironic but never descending to cynicism, Dave Graney cloaks himself in the idiosyncratic personae of the alter egos he creates through his lyrics and sings them like he's occasionally smiling to himself at his own lyrical dexterity. Never sounding like he's had to resort to a thesaurus, he paints his picture with the eye for detail and narrative elan of the best storytellers - Andrew Cox
