"In an exporting triumph of rare proportions we sold coal to Newcastle or more correctly Newcastle sold coal to Newcastle with this debut album from three adolescent Novocastrians. Taking the American grunge sound pioneered by bands such as Nirvana and Soundgarden, the Chair fashioned a stunningly competent record for ones so young and sold the music back to from whence it had come. Like many of my cynical and embittered generation I remained sceptical of Silverchair's merit, for some time believing them to be little more than a gimmick that would pass like so many yo-yo fads from a school playground. Then I saw them perform live at the ARIAs. They blew the back of my head off and as I collected some pieces of my skull from the rear of the auditorium after the show I was forced to admit that they are the most kick arse band this country has produced since AC/DC. Silverchair have gone on to produce more assured and mature records than this one, but for shear initial impact and the near Beatlesque excitement it generated, Frogstomp remains unique in the Australian oeuvre."
