Includes bonus track not available on USA edition - a cover of the Eurythmics’ ‘Love Is A Stranger’.
The new album caps a period which has seen Martha tour Australia twice - not including her first visit, at the beginning of ‘05, for Hal Wilmer’s Leonard Cohen tribute ‘Came So Far For Beauty’ and shows with brother Rufus and mother and aunt Kate & Ann McGarrigle - to positively rapturous acclaim. That acclaim went everywhere her eponymous debut album went, and withstood the controversy surrounding her gut-wrenchingly beautiful first single ‘Bloody Mother F***ing A**hole’. In turn it found Martha appearing on Rockwiz (twice), hosting Rage, appearing on Triple J’s Hottest 100 compilation and generally becoming a darling of the Australian media.
When she wasn’t in Australia or home in Brooklyn, Martha was busy making music with The Who’s Pete Townshend (who plays on the first single ‘Comin’ Tonight’ and one other track on the new album), Damon Albarn’s Africa Express, Antony Hegarty of Antony & the Johnsons, and Snow Patrol, with whom she scored the international hit ‘Set The Fire To The Third Bar’. She also married long-time boyfriend (and her bassplaying producer) Brad Albetta, and had brother Rufus, mother Kate McGarrigle, father Loudon Wainwright, Linda Thompson, Emmylou Harris and Ed Harcourt sing at their wedding. Her performances at the Leonard Cohen tribute were included in the film ‘I’m Your Fan’, she performed Bertold Brecht and Kurt Weill’s ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ with the Royal Ballet Company in London, and sang Pink Floyd’s ‘See Emily Play’ with her mother at a Syd Barrett tribute - a song she liked so much she recorded it for the new album.
With it’s glorious hooks, distinctive melodic style and intimate lyrics, the new album is pure Martha. But there’s a lushness and glowing sensuality to the recording that hasn’t been evident before. ‘I Know You’re Married...’ contains a near embarrassment of riches - sonically, melodically, and emotionally - that will thrill long term fans as well as reach a whole new audience.
