In the early '70s, four teens from Memphis put together a pop band to make music that merged the architectural splendor of the original Byrds with the charged mystery of Revolver-era Beatles, adding to this rich brew an element of anxiety that gave it a dark undercurrent not usually associated with guitar-pop music. The fact that Big Star was obscure during itsbrief existence and remained so for the vast majority of music fans in the succeeding years only served to render its allure. And now, three decades later, after the band's break up and death of original band member Chris Bell, the improbable has happened. A very limited number of live appearances by founding members Jody Stephens and Alex Chilton alongsidePosies co-founders Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow led to the revitalized Big Star recording a dozen newly-written songs at Memphis's Ardent Studios-where the group cut the hugely influential #1 Record (1972) Radio City (1974) and Third/Sister Lovers - albums the enigmatic Chilton would later all but dismiss, rendering his decision to make another Big Star LP all the more intriguing.
$35.99 (AUD) Inshalla is a wonderfully unguarded and inspiring set that harnesses the band's fresh outlook and channels it through new methods of songwriting and arranging. Infectious drum grooves pulse beneath Temperley's emotive vocals and form an infectious dynamic that sees melodies to soar. Light keyboard flourishes, a single violin, inventive guitar tones tempered with a pleasing amount of space all paint this vivid portrait of a year in the life of Eskimo Joe. | $23.99 (AUD) | $43.99 (AUD) | Crescent City Groove Merchants $24.99 (AUD) |
