This album holds a unique place in the history of Australian pop. Not only did it set the foundations for Kylie to go on and become an international star, it also started the trend of soapie stars becoming singers. It all started for Kylie when she recorded a cover version of the R&B classic Locomotion while star starring in Neighbours as the tomboy mechanic Charlene Mitchell. That song went on to become the biggest selling single by an Australian artist in the 1980s. A re-recorded version eventually went to Number 2 in the UK and Number 3 in the US. But it's not the only pop classic on Kylie's squeaky debut album. Written and produced by the famed Stock Aitken Waterman team and released in June of 1988, Kylie is also home to another couple of monster global hits: I Should Be So Lucky and Got To Be Certain. Spurred on by the enormous popularity of her role in Neighbours, the Kylie album went to Number 1 in both Australia and the UK. The record also helped make Kylie, who was only 22-years-old at this point, the biggest selling artist in the UK in 1988.
