The band name the hampdens is taken from Hampden College in Donna Tartt's novel "the Secret History". The book focuses on a group of college kids embroiled in a pagan cult. The hampdens are Gav, Susannah and Jules. Gav and Jules drove across the Nullabor in 2002 and met Susannah in Melbourne when she'd just turned 17 and talked her into starting a band with them. "the Last Party" is the hampdens' first record, and "Generation Y" will be the first single off that record. Also includes a version of The Postal Service's "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight"
The hampdens influences include Fleetwood Mac, the Cure, New Order, Blur and Air.
