You might recognise Mick Turner’s name – or his sounds – from the Dirty Three, that international benchmark for moody, warped rock … with violin. On Marlan Rosa, the instrumental magic which Turner has helped to weave in the Three is overtaken by a singular focus: Marlan Rosa is all Turner’s doing, save some help from violinist Jessica Billey. And the result is an album every bit as evocative, emotive and eclectic as you would expect from someone whose “day job” is as sidekick to the inimitable Warren Ellis.
