San Francisco was at the center of an explosion of artistic creation during the mid-to-late 60s. Whether itwas art, poetry or music, the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco was the place for like-mindedindividuals to explore and create. Renowned jazz columnist and television producer Ralph J. Gleason tooknote of the exploding rock music scene and created several groundbreaking television documentariesspotlighting the music emerging from San Francisco.Videotaped on location at Family Dog On The Great Highway in San Francisco in February 1970, the showcaptures the heyday and diversity of the San Francisco sound with three of the most well known bands toemerge from the scene: Santana, who would release their second album at the end of 1970; The GratefulDead, including original band member Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, who were making a name for themselveswith their jam-filled performances; and Jefferson Airplane, who were, at the time, the biggest of the bandsfrom the San Francisco Bay Area.
