'Nightmoves' first aired on Channel Seven on May 13 1977. The Seven Network owned exclusive Australian rights to footage from overseas shows such as 'Midnight Express' and decided to launch an adult version of 'Countdown' along the lines of UK's Old Grey Whistle Test, concentrating on live footage rather than video clips, album music rather than pop. Seven's program director in Melbourne Gary Fenton called in Michael Gudinski, record company chief and promoter of local and international concerts. Michael brought Lee Simon, program director of Melbourne radio's EON-FM, to the meeting. Fenton invited videotape operator Andrew McVitty. Twenty minutes later the decision was made. Gudinski was made responsible for the content, Lee Simon would host, and McVitty would put it all to air. Eventually 'Nightmoves' began running and filming its own concerts. One of the show's major innovations was the use of stereo 'simulcasts' in conjunction with FM radio, and 'Nightmoves'-produced material ended up screened on cable TV in the US and on the BBC in England. The show ran nationally late on Friday nights(rarely before midnight) until 1984. This classic Australian musictelevision series has never been available on any format. Three DVDs including a full DVD of very informative interviews with the acts done at the time, as well as recent interviews with Nightmoves creators Michael Gudinski and Lee Simon on the lasting legacy of the show.
