Sunset Studies opens with an impressive behemoth: The hole in your roof is an hell of a song, with guitars and lyrics that are things of awe: the frontman’s evocative style is powerful, and never fails to amazes the listener. On the lighter Maroondah reservoir it’s astonishing the passage “The cold cold scent of stone and mulch, The great stone wall to stave the rush, To think that peace might be too much, Waiting for that giant touch...”. Those words are cryptic, but also thought-provoking. Furthermore Augie March also have an interesting musical attitude, with structures that never sound banal.

The whole record is a brilliant, precious treasure made by an handful of precious gems: the gentle There’s no such place, where “there’s a sun that doesn’t set but settles”, the title track (which reminisces the dreamy sound of Mazzy Star), and what is maybe the best effort by Augie March, Men who follow the spring the planet ‘round, a song which smells of tradition and succeeds in charming its listeners.. The same can be said about The good gardener (on how he fell): it's incredible how this band’s works immediately sound as a classic, as if they've always been here, covered by the dust of times in their longing of being discovered.

These Australian guys are among the most interesting, unexpected acts of the last years. It’s rare to find a band capable of delivering such a mature debut: but probably the world will never acknowledge their talent and let them just pass as quietly as a shadow in history. A graceful shadow indeed.
