It takes a certain kind of (predominantly white and male) chin-strokin-guitar-lovin FREAK to really love Mike Patton's "project" bands - the kind of people who talk in hushed tones about diminished chords and other such nonsense: normal people who live in THE REAL WORLD dismiss this kind of music as anything but - as little more than kids messing around.
'WRITE A REAL SONG' they scream
'ONE WITH A CHORUS' they plead
'MY KID COULD DO BETTER THAN THAT' they mock
'IT'S NOT EVEN MUSIC' they announce
They think this sort of self-indulgent waffle should not even be allowed to see the light of day.
They are, of course, wrong.
So the concept this time around is one song for each day of April 2005. Some 'songs' are little more than aural junk (April Fool's day being one appropriately enough...), but pasted all together they seem to make some sort of sense: well, sense in a disjointed 21st Century kind of way (artificial stimulation no doubt best needed to really hear what's going on).
Longtime fans will be thrilled to know that Fantomas STILL sound like the musical equivalent of John Wayne Gacy - bright colourful clowns on the surface, but dig a bit deeper and...
What pushes it's way through these songs (let's call it a mixtape put together by an escaped mental patient) is childhood memories: pinball machines, merry go rounds, rock a bye baby, children laughing and singing - all the sounds of innocence trying to escape but beaten down by some heavy heavy sludge rock: picture a rusty swing in the breeze and then a chainsaw starting up. Kitschy Stephen King horror movie soundtracks.
Much like Yoshitoimo Nara's beautiful artwork - full of (not so) innocent little girls: what you see isn't what you get.
I'm still left wondering if Mike Patton listens to his own music in his 'downtime'? If you manage to sit through this all in one sitting then you are one sick puppy!

The album is the follow-up to last year's 'The Shadow Of An Empire'. The album is not just one of the year's most beautiful, incisive albums, it's also the young singer-songwriter's most personal statement yet. |
