The Band of Gold is Tex Perkins and Rachael Tidd on vocals, bassist Steve Hadley, guitarists Shane Reilly and Shannon Bourne, and Dave Folley on drums. These fine folk became a unit by chance, bound by much-lauded deeds performed in the hit stage concert 'The Man In Black'. After more than a year of relentless roving together these six souls found themselves locked tight in a kind of musical shorthand. So when talk of recording began, it was the briefest of chinwags that prompted the making of this album.Tex Perkins and the Band of Gold was borne of a bunch of kindred musical spirits with a collective hankering to re-interpret some classics. The songs? A rag-tag bunch of possibles, a smattering of alt-folk-country favourites with a patina all their own: Kris Kristofferson, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, John Prine, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Porter Wagoner, Johnny Paycheck - songsmiths and performers who lived and are loved for the music they made.Mostly arranged in a Melbourne studio over a few days in late 2010 and recorded as one-take, live, all-ins, this album was scratched into the wax, baked and left on the windowsill to cool. The result? As close as you'll get to having The Band of Gold in your lounge room and calling the tunes yourself.
