'Thiefth' is the first collaboration between poet SUSAN HOWE and musician DAVID GRUBBS. In late 2003, the two set about to create performance versions of "Thorow" and "Melville's Marginalia" two of Howe's longer poems. Grubbs brings together a diverse collection of sound sources, referencing CHARLES IVES' "Concord Sonata", Howe's splitting of words, melting snow, and light patterns overhead. Grubbs began his efforts by recording Howe's reading of thepoem and eliciting contributions from Swedish reed player MATS GUSTAFSSON and Greek cellist NIKOS VELIOTIS. Susan Howe is the author of numerous books of poems and two volumes of criticism. Shewas awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship (1996), International Book Of The Year by the TIMES (1993) and she was elected a Chancellor of The Academy of American Poets in 2000. She is currently the Samuel P. Capen Chair of Poetry and the Humanities at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
