Patti Smith tries her hand at a covers record and, as expected, all her idols and likeminded souls feature: Dylan, Neil Young, The Stones, Hendrix, Tears For Fears...
Huh? Tears For Fears? Read On...
"I originally chose a different list entirely, but as the record evolved, I wound up doing other songs for different reasons. For instance the Tears for Fears song “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” wasn’t originally on the list, but I was in a cafe somewhere and it came on. The lyrics struck me as very apropos to our present situation, so I thought it would be interesting to sing it now, but as a political song. I knew that I wanted to do a Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan song, a Nirvana song, but things evolved. “Gimme Shelter” was a live, spur of the moment version in the studio with Flea, Tom Verlaine and my band." - Patti Smith
