Upon first laying the needle down, the listener is greeted by a warm wash of sounds that seems to breeze in from decades back - Vandervelde's singular voice emerges from the drums and keys. The tones may be familiar, but his voice as an artist is his own, new and wholly contemporary. On songs such as "California Breezes", "Someone Like You" and "Lyin' In Bed", it's clear that the material on this first long-player from Vandervelde is of a higher order-lyrically more personal and stripped down. 'Waiting For The Sunrise' is the beautiful result of having extended himself both musically and emotionally. After three American tours and hitting the UK and Europe in 2007, Vandervelde relocated from Chicago to Brooklyn where he wrote extensively on his acoustic guitar prior to commencing a series of studio sessions. While his previous release 'The Moonstation House Band' was the singular product of Vandervelde isolated for an extended period of time within a studio (performing most of the record himself no less), 'Waiting For The Sunrise' was created with the help of his touring band. Garnering comparisons to everyone from T. Rex and David Bowie, to Fleetwood Mac, Jackson Browne and Wilco, Vandervelde is one of the world's most buzzing new songwriting talents.
