To many, turntablism albums are the equivalent of extended guitar solos: technical indulgences that appeal only to other guitarists. Thank god, then, for Eric San AKA KID KOALA, who makes the genre fun again. Equal parts fun & funk, his new album 'Your Mom's Favourite DJ' displays the endless possibilities there is when you create new music out of old music. Unofficially celebrating 10 years since debut release, the 'Scratchchratchratchatch' cassette, this album also hints at forthcoming projects (a book about a clarinet-playing mosquito, a musical puppet show). There is the romance, silent movie comedy and swing that your mother may well smile at, and the enthralling deftness and complexity you'd expect from KID KOALA, with everything woven together with classic hip hop beats, breaks and rocking guitar jams. The new album does show a slightly different side of Sans and proves he's expanded his arsenal of sounds considerably.
